Cataract is an eye disease caused due to dense and cloudy formation in the lens of the eye. It begins when the proteins in the eye form clumps that stops the lens from transmitting clear images to the retina. It is a slow developing disease which eventually interferes with the vision. Causes of cataract include overproduction of oxidants, certain disease such as diabetes, trauma, smoking, radiation therapy, to name a few. Its symptoms consist of blurry vision, faded colours, heightened sensitivity to glare, double vision and many more. It is a common disease amongst old people but can happen to anyone at any age.

Myopia, also called near-sightedness is known to be the most common cause of vision impairment in people under 40 years. Myopia happens when the eyeball is very long or the cornea is too much curved, stopping the light from entering your eye to focus correctly. The images focus in front of the retina, instead of directly on the retina. Myopia typically starts in childhood which may develop gradually or rapidly, and it also tends to be hereditary. The symptoms consist of blurred vision of distant objects, the need to squint, problem in seeing while driving and headaches due to eyestrain. Usually, myopia stabilises during early adulthood but in some cases, it continues to develop with age.

Glaucoma is regarded as a group of eye conditions that causes damage to the optic nerve, which should essentially stay healthy for a good vision. It affects gradually and one might not notice a change in vision until the condition reaches an advanced state. This disease is caused when the fluid pressure of what is called aqueous humor within the eye rises to an abnormal high. This fluid usually drains out via a tissue called Trabecular meshwork. When it is produced excessively or the drainage system malfunctions, it can’t flow out at its normal rate, causing the eye pressure to increase. Symptoms of glaucoma include patchy blind spots in the peripheral vision, tunnel vision, severe headache, eye pain, nausea and vomiting, blurred vision and eye redness. It is one of the major causes of blindness for people over the age of 60.
